P.E.
Welcome to St Peter's P.E. curriculum page
At St Peter’s, we are passionate about helping children enjoy an active, healthy lifestyle. Our aim is to inspire a love of movement while teaching important skills such as agility, balance, coordination, cooperation, competition, fitness, and respect. Through P.E., children develop confidence, learn new skills, and gain a lifelong appreciation for being active.
Our P.E. curriculum is broad, progressive, and tailored to each stage of learning. In the Early Years, children focus on the FUNdamentals of movement through themed lessons that link to classroom learning. In Key Stage 1, they build on these fundamentals—running, jumping, hopping, balancing, and coordinating their movements—while learning how their bodies change during exercise. Structured playtimes and a variety of extra-curricular activities help children become confident movers by the end of KS1.
In Key Stage 2, P.E. becomes both broad and deep. Children develop their skills and understanding through a wide range of activities, including handball, parkour, tag rugby, dance, football, athletics, basketball, gymnastics, and high-5 netball. All teaching staff receive specialist training from our P.E. expert, Mr. Sigley, ensuring children get high-quality instruction and opportunities to perform, compete, and stay active.
At St Peter’s, we aim for every child to finish their time with us not only physically confident but with a genuine love of being active and healthy.
Physical Education at St. Peter’s Catholic Academy
From EYFS to Year 6, children at St Peter’s enjoy a wide range of sports and physical activities. In the early years, they focus on developing core movement skills through fun, themed lessons. In Key Stage 1, they build on these skills and start learning how their bodies respond to exercise, with extra opportunities through play and clubs.
In Key Stage 2, children take part in lessons twice a week, learning sports such as football, basketball, gymnastics, dance, and more. They compete in local competitions, enjoy external coaching in activities like cricket and after-school football, and take part in swimming lessons in Year 4 and Year 6.
Across all year groups, P.E. at St Peter’s encourages children to be active, confident, and enjoy a healthy lifestyle.
House Captains and Vice House Captains
At St Peter’s, we select children to represent each of our four house teams. These pupils help encourage and motivate their teammates to be the best they can be. We also appoint Sports Leaders, who inspire others to stay active, improve their fitness, and earn points for their house.
Our House Captains, Vice Captains, and Sports Leaders play an important role in our annual St Peter’s Sports Festival, helping to lead and support their teams. In addition, Mr. Sigley works with our leaders to train them in running fun and engaging games during break and lunch times, giving every child more opportunities to enjoy being active.
